Kirkcudbright 2021

Dunrod Kirkyard.

The rural parish of Dunrod is mentioned in 1160, when the church and lands were granted by Fergus, first Lord of Galloway, to Holyrood. It so continued until the Reformation. In 1663 Dunrod parish along with the Galtway parish was united with the parish of Kirkcudbright. The site of the small church is three and a half miles from Kirkcudbright. As traced some years ago, it was thirty feet by fifteen,  originally constructed from whinstone. The foundations stand on an exposed hill in a shallow valley. It is surrounded by the walled burial ground which at present is uncared for but can be clearly seen as you cross the farmland from the road.

Access is restricted as the cemetery is located in a military

firing range. If the Red flags are flying do not enter. National grid ref NX 698 461.
