The Woods Caravan Park. Clackmannanshire.

A two night stopover on our way to the Grantown on Spey turned out to be a Caravan and Motorhome Club Affiliated Site with some of the best facilities we have come across on our many motorhome adventures. They are very clean, modern and warm. This popular site was upgraded in 2018 with a new reception area that stocks a good selection of basic goods.

One side of the site is framed by the beautiful Ochil Hills, which we had explored previously when we camped just outside of Stirling. Following some familiar Scottish rain the hills where topped with a striking rainbow which i managed to catch on the camera .

The rain stopped long enough for us to explore some of the local area and our first port of call was the rather strange Sauchie Tower. The original building had six storeys, a courtyard and an outer wall on at least two sides. A turnpike stair provided access to all stories. the lower floors were used for storage and above was the Great Hall with ‘bedchambers’ on other floors. It was built around 1412 by Sir James Schaws whose son became Governor of Stirling Castle in 1460.

More use should be made of old disused railway and we followed a very good example of this. A tarmac path for both walkers and cyclists which gave brilliant views of the Ochil Hills, led surprisingly to a shopping outlet which thankfully for us had a Costa, so lunch was not a problem. This and the Stirling Mills sits at the edge of Tillicoultry. The former woollen mills, which produced blankets, plaids and tartan shawls, is now reputed to be Scotlands largest furniture store.
